“I drink and I know things”
Just like our favorite Lannister, I LOVE to know things. All sorts of things. Some are more useful than others. And while my beverage of choice is more often tea or Diet Dr. Pepper, (though I won’t say no to a good glass of red wine or a nice aged whisky) the sentiment still rings true. One of my particular passions is language and writing.
I love words and stories and I’m fascinated by how the English language came to be and how it continues to evolve. I love vocabulary and knowing the history of words. I love how with a little rearrangement and with a few weird squiggles, we can tell an endless array of different stories using the same few words.
I also believe this knowledge has helped me throughout my life. Being able to write and speak well helped me to be taken more seriously when I was younger and just starting out professionally. It has helped me be more persuasive both professionally and personally.
Now I have a young son who is just being introduced to the wonderfully weird world of the English language. He has learned some of the ‘rules’ to spelling and grammar. He gets frustrated though when words don’t follow those rules and sees that the grammar rules he’s learning are not always followed in the real world. He likes to play with words and their pronunciation, but then sometimes gets mad when people don’t understand him. In trying to help him navigate this crazy thing called language, the idea for this blog was born.
What if there was a place you could go for cool vocabulary words, helpful nuggets of grammar usage, or interesting facts about language that was modern, relevant, accessible, and easily digestible? Are there other people like me out there who just like to “know things”? Where is my tribe of Geeky Grammarians? This is my quest. Join me!
